Henna is a leaf of a henna tree. Its scientific name is Lawsonia Inermis.
Henna is also called as mehndi in north India whereas in south part of
India it is called as marudhani or gorintaakku. Originally henna came from
middle east. Eventhough people from middle east brought it to India during
their invasion, since then it has been a big part hindu weddings. It is
not a religious ceremony but a family tradition. Typically bride to be
wears henna 1 or 2 days before the wedding so that the dress doesn't get
stains since henna on cloths leave a long lasting stain.
